Tremont Museum and Historical Society held its organizational meeting in September of 1985 and received its state charter and tax exempt status in the spring of 1986. The purpose for which the society is organized is to bring together those people interested in the history of Tremont and the surrounding? area. The major function of the organization is to discover and collect any material which may help to establish or illustrate the area; its exploration, settlement, development, and activities in? peace and war; its progress in population, wealth, education, arts, science, agriculture, manufacturers, trade and transportation. The society collects all pertinent printed materials and objects illustrative of life, conditions, events, and activities of the past and present. The Society provides for the preservation of such material and? for its accessibility, as far as may be feasible, to all who wish to examine or study it. It cooperates with officials in insuring the preservationand accessibility of the records, and archives of the area and villages and institutions, and undertakes the preservation of historic buildings, monuments and markers. The Society disseminates historical information and arouses interest in the past by publishing historical material in the newspapers or otherwise;by holding meetings with pageants, and addresses, lectures,? papers, and discussions; by marking historic building sites, and trails; and by using the media of radio, television, and? the internet to awaken public interests. Since its organization, the Society has grown to a membership of about 150 members. Bi-monthly meetings are held which feature a program on some related historical topic. A bi-monthly newsletter is published and sent to the membership and potential members. Current projects include the continuous collecting of old local newspapers and objects. Two obituary books have been published and are currently for sale. Each year, we make a concentrated effort to acquire historical objects to place in our museum. Our museum building, which is located on Sampson Street in Tremont, has served us well. But we are to the point that we are quickly running out of space to display our items. Our current goals are to continue to generate interest in our museum and historical society and to acquire interesting historical objects to display in our building. Our plan is to establish an endowment fund to provide income to fund operations of the museum, including hiring an employee to allow us to have the museum open more days. We also have a current goal of acquiring funds to allow us to purchase a suitable larger building for our museum. Our long-term goal is to have a museum with interesting displays that will portray an accurate history of the area, which will attract local people and tourists to the point we will be open almost every day. Since we are an tax-exempt organization that is organized under Section 501(e)(3) of the tax code, any contributions to our organization are tax deductible. There are several ways of helping our organization and getting a tax benefit: ?Cash contributions - fully deductible currently. ?Contributions of stocks and bonds - if you have stocks with a low tax basis that? you give to our organization, you are allowed? to deduct the fair market value at date of the gift; therefore, you avoid paying tax on the capital gain, which you would do if you sold the stock. ?Charitable Remainder Trust - this is a way of receiving the income from the assets for your lifetime, receiving a tax deduction currently, and leaving the principle to our Society at the end of the specified time or at your death. Bequests in your wills - while this does not give you a current tax deduction, it is a deduction on the federal estate taxes at your death. A Tremont Historical Research Center will be established and named for anyone contributing $75,000 or more. Your contributions to our organization will benefit the community as well as provide a tax benefit to you.? Our Society does qualify for matching funds from employers who provide them. Any and all contributions are welcome and we do encourage you to consult your tax advisor to determine how you can help us and at the same time get the best possible tax advantage. Any help is greatly appreciated. Floyd Hazelman (Page Manager) hazelman@comcast.net THE MUSEUM IS OPEN FROM 2PM TO 4PM ON THE 2ND SUNDAY OF THE MONTH. MEMBERS AND CHILDREN ARE ADMITTED FREE.
